About RichardsBay
History
RichardsBay is named after Frederick William Richards, R.N. born on 30 November 1833 in County Wexford, Ireland. He joined the Royal Navy at the tender age of 15 and underwent his training at the Naval School, New Cross.
In 1878 Commodore Richards was appointed Commander of the West Coast of Africa. On arrival at the Cape, hearing of the British defeat at the hands of the Zulus at Isanhlwana in 1879, landed at Port Durnford on the East Coast with 250 men to offer relief. One of the ships under his command, HMS Forrester, suveyed the coastline and the Mhlathuze lagoon, recording it as Richards Bay.
Commodore Richards was knighted in 1881. He left the Cape in 1882 with the rank of Rear Admiral. In 1893 he became the first Naval Lord and Admiral-of-the-Fleet in November 1898.
